The Blue Foundation for a Healthy Florida, Inc., is the philanthropic affiliate of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida created as a 501(c)(3) philanthropic foundation that supports community-based solutions that enhance access to quality health-related services for the uninsured and underserved in Florida.
Childhood obesity is a growing problem throughout Florida, with 32.5 percent of children ages 10-17 overweight or obese; nationally, the percentage is 30.6 percent.
The Blue Foundation is launching a new initiative to address the causes of childhood obesity that goes beyond the traditional nutrition and fitness programs.
Embrace a Healthy Florida is an $8 million, four-year strategic effort that will provide grants to nonprofit organizations, fund research and foster community collaboration and engagement. The effort will focus on five regions: Jacksonville, Miami, Orlando, Tallahassee and Tampa.
Responsive Grantmaking
The Blue Foundation awards grants during two proposal cycles
in the summer and winter. Grants are strategically awarded to diverse, philanthropic solutions
that:
- Improve program capacity and reduce barriers to access
- Nurture community health leadership to reinforce local solutions, foster innovation and
sustain quality
- Leverage financial, human and other resources to maximize measurable impact
The current focus for responsive grantmaking is on community health clinics and outreach programs.
